"Archaeology as reflected in the pages of this magazine has a parallel world peopled by private collectors who buy and sell antiquities, often found as a result of metal-detecting. The two worlds increasingly meet via the neutral ground of the Portable Antiquities Scheme, but we still eye each other with mistrust and suspicion, and for this reviewer, reading a book that is intended as a recognition guide for dealers and detectorists feels like an act of treason.

And yet, it is a very good book that any museum curator or finds-hut supervisor would be happy to consult. Packed into 129 pages is a concise and authoritative guide to the material culture of the period AD 400 to 650, well illustrated, with distribution maps and diagrams, explanations of key terminology and notes on background topics such as zoomorphic design and brooch production methods. The book offers through coverage of a wide range of objects, from everyday items to the more luxurious types.

It is clear that the two worlds have much in common - books like this can bring us still closer still."

Minerva – The International Review of Ancient Art & Archaeology, March-April, 2010
“A competent and readable introduction to early Anglo-Saxon metalworking and ceramic production ...followed by a superbly straightforward introduction to the established styles of early Anglo-Saxon metalwork. The real value of the volume, however, is the catalogue. The text ... is descriptive and artefact dating is discussed in broad terms. For each artefact type there are superbly reproduced and accurately scaled colour photographs of the finds; the first time ... any book has done this for early Anglo-Saxon artefacts. ... as a popular and visual introduction to the range of early Anglo-Saxon metalwork, this book is a most welcome first and an invaluable guide.”- Dr. Howard Williams

Treasure Hunting, December 2009
“The author has brought together a wealth of information on Germanic metalwork and ceramics, describing in more than 130 informative pages their various styles and methods of production ... with great accuracy and precision ... the author enriches the pages with around 200 professional photographs, 20 maps and museum quality artwork. ... Absolutely essential reading for all who pursue this hobby as a quest for knowledge.”
- Ted Fletcher

 Treasure Hunting, December 2009
“This book exudes quality - quality research, quality writing, quality illustration, quality production. It is a magnificent book - a work of Early Anglo-Saxon art and a work of art in its own right. This is more than an authoritative reference book; it is a compulsive and pleasurable read for anyone remotely interested in the period.” - Chris Rudd
